This article describes how a robot was able to learn on its own how to escape from a containment area, then maneuver out of the building. Like someone else mentions, it wouldn’ve been really scary if it had the thought to free its “friends”.

More mention of cool companies (well, movie and gaming companies at least) movine to Linux for the brunt of their work. Time to start looking at Disney’s job openings.

My friend Tom (who I somtimes refer to as “Bael”) introduced me to ProgressQuest. This is a pretty funny spoof on the robotic nature of MMORPG’s to date. It’s basically a program that you run on your Windows system that sits in your system tray, happily plugging away at “progress” for you in the “game”. It seemed to take up more processing power on my laptop than I cared for, so I killed it after some time.

Wow, talk about a blast from the past. I found textfiles.com today. This is a collection of all those obscure ASCII formatted files that you could find in the download areas of any number of BBS’s back in the 80’s. I remember having quite a stack of these printed out when I was a BBS-dork in early high school. It’s great to see that some of this stuff isn’t lost forever once BBS’s started to go extinct. Apple PEEK and POKE anyone?

Update: Oh God, I found one that I wrote.

I decided to send an email off to AMH over on the Dead Zone web site, asking if there was any chance at all they’d be looking for outside writers again. Desperate plea, I know. They have a neat Writer’s Guide that looks like an email memo sent to some of the show’s staff regarding what they’re looking for. I’m not sure I’m interested in writing something if there’s no chance of getting it at least read.

This looks useful. Might be good for generating PDF files of web pages for use at work (like the purchase orders)

Need to take a look at this for work:

“I hired told me about how they cut their company’s bandwidth costs by 30% by installing a proxy that used mod_gzip on everything going out.”

What I mean by “packageless” is, is it even possible to make a recipe for say, four people, of something like a 16-bean salad? You wouldn’t go out and buy a bunch of packages of different beans and then throw them together in a bowl uless you were cooking for 20. These people have something here with this sort of packaging, making great tasting meals for a few people that would otherwise be irrational to make on one’s own.

Saw this mentioned on Slashdot: Newsforge. Linux news, etc. I added the link to the right column.

Cool looking program. Imagine the crank calls you can make with this puppy.
